Captain America: The Winter Soldier released across the United Kingdom on Wednesday, but it’s echoes are already being heard across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Firstly, we believe that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the strongest Marvel solo movie to date, with a solid performance from Chris Evans’ as the title character and an ever alluring display from Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. The film crosses genre in such a way that the film stays fresh whilst sourcing the same material as always. The espionage, spy genre crossed with the action superhero movie works wonders for the Captain America formula, and allowed directors Anthony and Joe Russo to explore new ventures and directions to take the MCU.
Whilst setting up Avengers: Age of Ultron and future adventures for Steve Rodgers in the credit scenes, there is one significant inclusion in the film that many have overlooked – and that is the implication of the ever productive Tony Stark. Spoilers from here on out, people.
To kick off Marvel Phase Three, Robert Downey Jr. brought us Iron Man 3. Long story short, Stark has his own ass handed to him on a plate and lost control of his high-tech machinery where he decides he must start over. Iron Man 3, following on from the events in New York, that Tony Stark was vulnerable. He is not the cocky indestructible Iron Man we saw in his first two solo movies. He is defeatable, and he is scared.
Then, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it is Tony Stark’s technology that helps create the super-carries that threaten twenty-million lives. It is his mind and his technology that makes it possible, and he wasn’t even directly involved with the film.
And then, we turn to Avengers: Age of Ultron. Iron Man will return to fight alongside The Avengers..but what is the reason for the world ending threat this time? Oh yes…Tony Stark. It is widely believed with Hank Pym not being part of the MCU currently that Ultron will be a prototype developed by Tony Stark. Ultron goes mental…bye, bye Avengers. Not to mention the threat that The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will represent before they eventually join the ranks. Check out the teaser trailer below for Avengers: Age of Ultron, where you can clearly see Ultron being formed out of an Iron Man suit.
This is more of a discussion piece if anything, but we think it is quite clear where Tony Stark is heading.
Robert Downey Jr. is known to be having contractual issues with Marvel. And his future within the MCU is anything but confirmed, so in reality, we do expect an Iron Man exit sooner rather than later.
In fact, we predict that Iron Man will leave the Avengers after the events in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Though they may need him more than ever, does Tony Stark create more trouble than he is worth? Whilst the character provides a significant chunk of Marvel revenue, new characters could do the same, and Kevin Feige has already confessed that he and Joss Whedon want to bring in the rotating roster system from the comic books.
We can see Tony Stark deciding enough is enough after Avengers: Age of Ultron. He nearly killed himself and the love of his life, Pepper Pots. He put 20 million lives in danger by indirectly aiding Hydra in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And next year he will create an artificial intelligence that will threaten the everything…without S.H.I.E.L.D, The Avengers may need Stark more than ever, but we can see Tony Stark thinking to himself that he can not handle the pressure anymore. His mind is too creative and advanced, his lust to create and develop too strong…eventually he will finally finish everyone off with his masterpiece.
Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury already predicted Tony Stark to be a liability to himself and others back in Iron Man 2. He was only inducted into The Avengers because they had nowhere else to turn and need his expertise. S.H.I.E.L.D predicted that Stark would endanger himself and others, so the signs are there to suggest Marvel are building up to a dramatic exit for Iron Man.
What do you think? Do you think Tony Stark has a future in the MCU? Or do you think that events are being set in motion to signal the end for Tony Stark as we know it?
It will most likely not be the end of the character. Perhaps just the Robert Downey Jr. brand of Iron Man. Though we would struggle to accept anyone else as Stark, after all – Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man – we can see a re-casting a few years down the line.
Imagine it…the Avengers are struggling to overcome a significant foe in 2020, then BOOM! AC/DC overrides the PA system and in flies a newly cast Tony Stark to kick some butt.
Anyway, like we said, this is presenting an idea to the Marvel audience. Tell us what you think and get involved with the debate!
